~의 제물이 되다. ~의 희생양이 되다. ~의 먹이가 되다. 라는 뜻이다. 영영 사전을 찾아보면 to become a victim 이라고 나오는데 fall 에는 become 의 의미도 있기 때문이다. 특정한 상태가 되다. ~해지다. 예시로 우리가 잘아는 fall asleep 이 있다.

Fish for compliments

스스로를 비판하면서 상대로 하여금 자신을 칭찬하도록 만들다. 칭찬을 유도하다. 쉽게 말해 '답정너' 이다. 누가봐도 이쁜 셀카를 나 너무 못생겼어 라고 적어 올리는 일 등 칭찬을 바라는 속이 뻔이 보이는 사람에게 쓸 수 있다.

* 주어가 I 가 되면 '엎드려 절받기' 의미가 된다.

flog a dead horse 라고도 한다. '이미 끝난 일에 시간낭비하다' 라는 뜻인데 우리말 '뒷북친다' 와 비슷하다.

무언가를 strengthen 하거나 more effective 하게 하다. ~을 강화하다. ~을 보강하다. 라고 해석할 수 있다. beef 는 우리가 잘 알고있듯이 소고기이다. 외국에서도 소고기는 힘의 상징인가보다.

높게 평가되거나 높은 등급을 가지고 있는 사람이 작거나 중요하지않거나 알려지지 않은 장소나 기관에 있을때 사용한다. 라고 어렵게 설명할 수 있지만 쉽게말해 '이런 좁은물에서 놀사람이 아닌데' 라는 표현이다. big frog in a little pond. 라고도 쓰기때문에 우물안 개구리라고 잘못 번역하는 사람이 있는데 엄연히 다른 의미다. 반댓말로 small fish in a big pond 도 있다.

Dr. Jones could get a professorship at an Ivy League university, but he enjoys being a big fish in a small pond too much to ever leave Hannover College.

He was the hero in his family, a big frog in a small pond.

Call off the dogs. 

Call off your dogs 라고도 한다.  누군가에게 비난받거나 공격받는것을 개에 쫓기는것에 비유했다. Call off는 철수시키다 라는 뜻이다. 직역하면 개들 좀 철수시켜줘.  '공격 좀 그만해' '그만 비난해' 라는 뜻이다.

농장에서 젖소 (dairy cow) 가 작은 노력에도 꾸준히 우유를 생산하여 수익을 내는 것에서 유래함. Money maker 라고도 함. '화수분' '고수익 상품' '효자 상품' '황금알을 낳는 거위' 등으로 번역된다.

정보의 출처를 알리지 않고 이야기를 꺼내고 싶을때 사용한다. '누가 그러던데' '지나가던 길에 들었어' 정도로 번역할 수 있다.

양처럼 유순하고 온화한 사람을 묘사할때 사용한다.

She is as gentle as a lamb. that's why everybody likes her.

When he's with a girlfriend, he's as gentle as a lamb.

Back the wrong horse

'성공하지 못할 곳이나 사람을 지지하다.' 라는 뜻이다. back 은 '지지하다' 혹은 '경마에 돈을걸다' 라는 의미도 있다. 엉뚱한데 돈을 건다거나 실패할것이 불보듯 뻔한곳에 도전한다거나 여러가지 상황에 쓸 수 있겠다.

be a coward. 겁쟁이가 되다. 미드나 영화를 보면 coward 보다 chicken 을 더 많이 쓰는 것 같다.

물 밖에 나온 물고기처럼 주변 환경에 어울리지 않아 낯설고 불편할때 사용한다. to feel uncomfortable in a situation. 우리말로 '뻘쭘하다' 라는 표현에 적합하지 않을까 생각한다.
