Chicken out

두려움때문에 혹은 겁이나서 무엇인가 하는걸 거절할때 쓰며 부정적인 어감이 있다. '겁을 먹고 그만두다' '꽁무니를 빼다' 라는 뜻이다.

I always chicken out of everything.

He chickened out at the time they were taking him to operating theater. 

Chicken-hearted

'겁 많은' '소심한' '용감하지 않은' 이라는 뜻이다. 우리말로 '새가슴' 이란 표현이랑 비슷하지 않을까 생각한다.

He’s chicken-hearted, but I still love him.

They are just chicken-hearted boys. They can't defend themselves from any attacks. 

Counts one's chickens (before they hatch.)

Hatch 는 '부화하다' 라는 뜻이다. 직역하면 부화하기도 전에 닭을 세어본다는 뜻인데 우리나라 속담의 '떡 줄 사람은 생각도 않는데 김칫국 부터 마신다' 랑 비슷한 의미이다. 영영사전에는 '확실해지기 전에 미리 무언가의 성공을 가늠해보다' 는 뜻으로 나온다.

It's too soon to cry victory. Don't count your chicken before they hatch.

You might be able to get a loan from the bank, but don't count your chickens.

Cry wolf

실제로 늑대가 나타나지도 않았는데 늑대야! 라고 외친 양치기 소년처럼 위험하지 않은데 계속 도움을 청한다던가 문제가 없음에도 계속 불만을 제기하는 사람에게 cry wolf 한다고 한다. 여기서 cry 는 외치다로 해석해서 wolf 라고 외치다. 라고 보면 되겠다.

She had repeatedly rung the police for trivial reasons and perhaps she had cried wolf too often.

Pay no attention. She's just crying wolf again. Don't cry wolf too often. No one will come.

Curiosity killed the cat

지나치게 호기심이 많은 사람이나 너무 많은 질문을 하는 사람에게 '알면 다쳐' '그만 물어봐. 알아서 좋을거 없어' 의 의미로 경고하는데 쓰이는 영어 속담이다.

'Where did you get all that money?'
'Curiosity killed the cat.'

'Why are you going away so suddenly?'
'Curiosity killed the cat.'

Dead duck

어떤 물건이나 사람이 실패하거나 죽을 운명이라서 '가망없다' '끝장났다' 라고 말할때 비유적으로 사용 한다. 큰 실수를 한 친구에게 너 이제 엄마한테 들키면 '끝장났어 넌 이제 죽었다' 하는 의미로 사용되기도 한다.

That new budget bill was a dead duck before it hit the Senate.

That mechanic turned out to be a dead duck. He didn't even know how to change my oil.

When Mom finds out you snuck out of the house to meet your boyfriend, you're going to be a dead duck!
