정보의 출처를 알리지 않고 이야기를 꺼내고 싶을때 사용한다. '누가 그러던데' '지나가던 길에 들었어' 정도로 번역할 수 있다. 

"How did you know the news?"

As gentle as a lamb

양처럼 유순하고 온화한 사람을 묘사할때 사용한다.

She is as gentle as a lamb. that's why everybody likes her.

When he's with a girlfriend, he's as gentle as a lamb.

Back the wrong horse

'성공하지 못할 곳이나 사람을 지지하다.' 라는 뜻이다. back 은 '지지하다' 혹은 '경마에 돈을걸다' 라는 의미도 있다. 엉뚱한데 돈을 건다거나 실패할것이 불보듯 뻔한곳에 도전한다거나 여러가지 상황에 쓸 수 있겠다.

Be a chicken

be a coward. 겁쟁이가 되다. 미드나 영화를 보면 coward 보다 chicken 을 더 많이 쓰는 것 같다.

Be a cold fish

냉담한 사람. 냉정한 사람. 영문사전에는 distant 하고 unfeeling 한 사람으로 묘사되어 있다. distant가 사람에게 쓰일 경우에는 '딴생각을 하는' '다정하지 않은' '거리를 두는' 의 의미이고 unfeeling 은 '무정한' '냉정한' 의 의미이다. 

He rarely talks to his colleagues. He's a cold fish.

She turned into a cold fish when Itried to kiss her.

Be like a fish out of water. 

물 밖에 나온 물고기처럼 주변 환경에 어울리지 않아 낯설고 불편할때 사용한다. to feel uncomfortable in a situation. 우리말로 '뻘쭘하다' 라는 표현에 적합하지 않을까 생각한다.

At a formal dance, John is like a fish out of water.

After her divorce, she was like a fish out of water.
